Car hire and CDW

Hi All,Whenever I go abroad and hire a car I’m always clobbered with CDW extras that seem logical when being ‘sold’ to me. Fortunately I’ve never needed to claim against them. Are there many companies that include CDW in their tariff and/or can I take out my own CDW independently prior to departure?
