Glass hob - choose frameless or steel frame?

I want to buy an induction hob. This question really applies to all glass hobs.

Do I choose a stainless steel framed model or a frameless one?

Just concerned about the breakage risk of the frameless. I was advised in John Lewis that they are more vunerable and was shown a broken one still on display....

In another store I was told that frameless are easier to clean.

I think frameless is just a fashion trend. What do you think?

I'm looking at:
Fagor DeDietrich frameless £299 offer
Zanussi framed £349
Bosch framed £499

People really abuse display items, deliberately tryto damage them to see what it takes to break them (sigh) plus they can get moved around between displays a bit which doesn't happen in real life. So I generally take showroom conditions with a pinch of salt.

I have a glass hob, it's half framed. It's easier to clean the frameless sides, than the top and bottom which are framed so I prefer that. I haven't broken it yet and I'm a Fashion Victim so I like the look of frameless.

Each to their own isn't it really? I'd just buy the hob I liked the best.

H dropped a part of the extractor (asi twas being installed) in another house straight onto a Neff induction hob, right in the middle and scratched it. Whether there was a frame or not wouldn't have made a difference. It's only if you drop something right onto the corner. If you hit it hard enough to break the glass on a frameless, I imagine you'd dent the frame!

  • Hi Martin

Both my sons had new kitchens in the last 18 months and both chose the same Neff induction hobb (frameless), purchased from John Lewis online.

My DIL dropped a bottle (stored in a wall cupboard near to the hob) which smashed the glass of the hob. (son wasn't happy as he had warned her about keeping heavy items in cupboards near to the hob).

Luckily, the JL warrantly covered accidental damage and the glass was replaced very quickly.

In such cases, I don't think a frame would make any difference?

    Cheers.

Frameless are easier to clean and in god knows how many years of dealing with kitchens, I've never had anyone tell me theirs has been damaged...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

  • Some very interesting comments.

What about touch control? The knobs on my old hob were always a pain to keep clean. But it touch control easy to use?

Finally, given the prices/models I listed above and I can have the Zanussi and Bosch with or without steel frame trim, which would you opt for? BTW, the cheapest, the Fagor is offering a 5 yeay warranty...

Didn't know John Lewis warranty covers breakages...that's good.
  • Hi Martin

Not sure if it was the JL warranty or the Neff warranty - either way, it was covered.

Don't know about the other makes but the touch controls on the Neff are easy to use and make cleaning a doddle (so my DIL informes me).

  • Is this a worthwhile option?

I'm used to old style ceramic (halogen) hobs.

I see that Hotpoint, Zanussi and AEG and probably other manufacturers are producing a mixed glass hob.

    Any thoughts?
  • De Dietrich touch control and toughen glass used by Schott. Very nice unit with dual De Dietrich oven, very nice. Get Induction and start saving money.
  • Not 2 rings of induction and two rings of old style halogen then?
