I want to purchase 2 adult returns from Reading to Newquay departing this Saturday, 9th July for one week. National Rail and all other train fare sites are showing a return off peak fare of £77. Can anyone tell if the fare will be the same if we pay on the day or could it be cheaper or more expensive? Thank you.

Yes that's a walk on ticket that you can buy on the day. Same price.

But look at advance singles (that you have to buy now) - you can still do it a bit cheaper than that depending on times.

    That's great, thanks very much.

It would still be interesting to know if the "off peak" fare published online is also the "walk on" fare?

Edit: I've just tried through First Great Western but get £38.50 for the Reading to Newquay journey and £30 for the return - Strange!!

Edit: Just phoned rail enquiries and the off peak return fare of £77 is the "walk on" fare and unrestricted. The slightly cheaper (£8.50) single fares are restricted to specific times so for the sake of £8.50 we'll opt for theoff peak return and then have the flexibility to change times if we wish.

    What do you mean?

If you do it properly, you have nothing to fear from any train operating company from using two or more tickets for your journey.

Split ticketing is fine if you keep to the rules. Main one is that the train must stop at the splitting station.

There are reports that some XC staff are ill trained in the rules and try to prevent you doing it.

On the main route I use I've never had a problem
  • Hi hope someone can help me I have spent hours trying to get the best fare travelling Sunday 28th August return Sat 3rd Sept 2011.

Im disabled so wanted few changes which on a sunday is a nightmare. Best deal I found was Raileasy
11.10 Motherwell via Newcastle arriving London KS 16.59
    rtn
    14.30 London Eust via Glasgow
Raileasy have fare for £127.80 for 2 people return but charge booking and credit card fee. I cant find same fare on any rail company site in fact they are more expensive.

Any idea how I find this fare elsewhere as need seat resevation etc and know of many complaints using this site
    thanks

You apparently have a Disabled Persons Railcard.

You are right, East Coast Trains website shows no Advance Singles available on that 11:10 Motherwell departure.

But on the 09:10 Motherwell departure, Advance Singles are available at £67.70 for two people using the one railcard.

But coming back can be done for £43.40 from Kings Cross... 14:30 departure too.

So total for two people is now £111.10.

You must book online at East Coast trains website to get those fares.

Remember, with Advance Singles you must travel on the booked trains.
