Insurance for 6months?

I need to renew my car insurance soon, however I am considering going abroad in 4-6months.
Is it possible to pay monthly(for a year's policy) and cancel as and when necessary, without incurring much costs or losing no-claims bonus etc?

    The problem i see hear is that if you cancell,mid way through and i speak from experience,you will loose money,however different companies seem to charge different amounts,i dont suppose you could really ask beforehand!!

    I dont really know what would happen if you paid monthly but i would suspect that you would not get a no claims bonus for that year.

    thanks maclean- they're cheaper than my renewal on PAYG and they do vans
