should i sell or try to get it repaired

Hi all,
Hope some of you experts can help me. I bought a clio before a month. Had been very busy due to new job and relocation, so missed to check the oil level. Only when i started hearing noise from the engine on motorway I realized and immediately stopped and filled the dry engine with 4 litres!!! but even though I still get that ticking every now and then. I am worried the engine would just break and deep hole in my pocket.

Asking one of my friend, said fill the engine with the thickest possible oil. Also went to a garage who is asking for £45 just to open and analyse of what can be done and can only give an estimate afterwards. What should I do? should i just replace it with thick oil or get it repaired...(its £1200 worth value)

Thanks

  • How old is it? If it's worth £1200 I'd say it's probably now older than 10-12 years. On that basis you can cause big problems by filling the engine with 'think' oil that is the wrong grade.

If you had to fill it with 4-litres of oil either that bonnet hasn't been opened for years or something is wrong.

If it's currently running okay I'd sell it and get another one with the money
  • get the normal oil and put heavy duty oil stabalizer by lucas in it, that will cut out the tapping noise!

If you were driving it on the Motorway, presumably at 70-80mph with no oil in it, I can't help but think the damage will be permanent.

    Have to agree with Stigy.
Plus running the crank with no lube will cause expensive problems,

yes even i was shocked on seeing the dip-stick dry. what do you guys think how much amount can i sell it for. Apart from that occassional engine noise, everything is in ok condition.

or shall i add another thin of that oil additive to make it thicker!!
