Grrr why do builders say they will come and don't turn up

Our garden wall has more or less fallen down. Its not a huge job but as the garden is raised by about 3 feet it needs a builder who will do a professional job. At the moment the garden hasn't subsided - its still held together with mud - but will do if its left too long. We have now phoned 7 builders (not job too small!)- 3 never returned the calls and 4 have not turned up after waiting on them all weekend and today and not a phone call to say they are not coming. Why didn't the 4 who did call back say they weren't interested instead of wasting time (which I've now got to make up at work). And does anyone know a decent , reliable builder in Derby.

Hi
I had a similar experience as I am currently having a single story extension and had loads of hassle like you from builders but carried on till i spoke to some one I knew I could work with without even seeing any of his previous work.
Even had some one wanting to quote me without coming on site the lazy git.
The right person is out there for the job!0 -
If its a garden wall, then try local and independent garden landscapers brickwork specialists / local guys or girls that won't charge the earth but will do a proper job...
I can't imagine a building co. will have time to perfect a garden wall, sorry thats not meant to offend but I do lots of work in gardens and you may want to find someone like www.armbrickwork.co.uk who is not a builder, but a brickwork and outside specialist - garden landscapes, external walls, patios, steps etc. This company of course isn't for you as its not your area, they're in Kent, but worth a look for some good ideas.
If you're stuck then contact your local council who usually have a fair trader list, the idea being that you're not messed about...
Good luck

You could post the job on mybuilder.com, so then tradesmen who would be interested in the job come to you, and they're all reviewed so you get piece of mind too. x x0

You could try Building Control at your local council as they know who's good and who to avoid0

You can try post a advert in craigslist or simular site/newspaper. And to check in google is there rewies/feeback of builders who have called. Hope you find decent builder0
