I have a .avi file on my PC which I'm looking to try & convert so that I can watch it on a DVD Player, I can play the file on a PC but once I put it onto a Blank DVD & try to play it on a DVD Player it doesn't work, I've tried it on 4 different machine's so I'm missing something.

A standard DVD player will not play AVI, unless it is a DIVX file and your DVD player is like the one Aldi had/have in which play DIVX.

To play on a standard DVD you need to make sure it is in a format your DVD player can play, ie, SVCD, DIVX, or DVD (VOB) and the likes.

There are many good (free) programs to convert between formats, but they can take a long time, I found it easier (less time consuming) to but the £40 HDMI DVD (and DIVX) player from Aldi.

Problems you can get with some conversion programs is, it takes ages and some can suffer from lipsync issues if not setup correctly.

AVI2DVD is not bad if you want to give it a go.

you need to convert the avi file into dvd format, have a look at http://www.trustfm.net/divx/SoftwareAvi2Dvd.html
Ever stop to think and forget to start again?
  • another program to try is nerovision (part of the nero package)

its not the best for quality out there but is very user friendly to get you started.

As others have said though depending on the type of file you are using you can easily siffer lip-sync problems when converting to DVD.

you can get divx players as cheap as £25.00 if you shop around. When you consider how much electricity you will burn leaving your computer going for 3hrs converting everytime its probably the better option in the end.

It does not matter if they are region free, they MUST support DIVX to play AVI, which the pacific's from Asda did not and most other cheapy's will not.

Look on the unit/manual for DIVX, otherwise you will not get it playing....
  • If you have a richer sounds near you they are selling a cyberhome DVD player with component out on it for around £40.

    it is Divx compatable etc...

You could try your disks in 100's of dvd players which are still sold today and 1000's produced over a 1-2 years ago and it still wouldn't play!! As the poster above says it must be Divx certified!! Multiregion has nothing to do with it.

here is the link to the cheapy divx player if its of any help. though you can probably pick one up a bit cheaper somewhere else.
