Seller wants buyer to pay Paypal fees

Seems to be my week for finding odd seller conditions! This one says he prefers not to use Paypal, but if buyer wants to then the buyer must pay the fees. I thought this wasn't allowed? I've not put link as I'm interested in an item, he's doing local collection so I could do that, but if I won it, and decided on postage option could he enforce fee paying, or would he just 'lose'the item?

I thought you had to have a Paypal account when signing up to Ebay (I take it this is where you found this on!) I certainly had to sign up to Paypal for my Ebay account.

I don't agree with the buyer being made to pay the fees. I would just collect it and pay cash on delivery if there is no Paypal option.

Any seller who does not prefer Paypal always seems dubious to me, they may charge fees but you have your back covered if anything goes wrong.

i just came across 1 too....bid on item with free p&p and now that the item is won for only 99p the seller wants £2.50 for p&p. they claim they never put free p&p...it mysteriously changed itself, although they also say that they didnt know how much it would be as they couldnt pack and weigh the item before it was won....how the thousands of other sellers manage to do this i dont know lol

The answer to both questions/points is actually the same.

Sellers cannot charge their paypal fees to the buyer nor can they add postage if none was shown. Therefore buyers who meet this sort of seller should cover themselves by paying immediately by paypal and make sure it only picks up what the auction stated. That leaves the seller with nowhere to go, if they refund and refuse to send goods, neg them.

sorry for hijacking the thread OP.

i never got a chance to pay as was out when that auction ended and when i got online 1-2 hours after the auction ended there was a message about p&p. when i tried to pay the extra was added and i couldn't change it. i feel a bit petty as it was only 99p but its the principal. the seller has made it clear i need to pay postage as she will not be selling something for 99p and its costing 2.50 to post. they even accused me of wanting something for nothing! i have let ebay know but havent had any response from them.

Go into paypal and send the seller 99p linking the auction by the item number. This should work and show the item as paid. OP this was common practice 5 or 6 years ago but is now outlawed by ebay so as above pay from within paypal, this will bypass any invoices sent.

Thanks everyone, I thought he couldn't ask for them. I'm thinking he's probably going to not send the item if I go for paying the postage and not pickup. It's a 60 mile round trip, so quite expensive fuel wise. Mind you, I have to win it first

This contravenes ebays selling conditions - so dont pay them the fees. It should come out of the final amount.

Well, I won the item, finished just after 1.30p.m. today, and thus went for less than similar items, so result there. I've paid by Paypal, no response as yet from seller, so I'm waiting now to see if he asks for the fees, or just accepts the payment. Many thanks for all your comments.
