hi there thanks for the responses, i dont want to claim csa money for him he has moved out of his parents (my brother/wife) and moved in with us i just wanted to know about tax credits, ema, child benefits etc

looking at ema website he would only get £10 as we both work and earn too much, but have been told by various people we could claim as if he was renting a room from us and we could get rent cheques off the council and he would get income support, would we be able to do this as we own the property

he is studying catering in his second year

He cannot get income support if he is in FT education.

I'd think it all depends on whether or not his parents are still claiming benefits i.e. CTC/CB for him. I'm not sure but I can't see LA paying HB for him to rent a room in a family members home.

I can't see anything that prevents someone who is not considered a CLOSE relative. Can't see nephew listed on the definition here.

However, full time students without dependents or disabilities are not usually eligible for HB/LHA.

That is incorrect, there are qualifications below degree level that are classed as advanced education (HNC, HND etc)

HNC and HND are degree level qualifications - usually counted as equivalent to first and second years of a degree.

God forbid! you expect the state to keep their child but not them always very interesting when people don't want to claim child support but still hold their hand out from the state.
