NUS Extra Card

Does anyone have one of these? Is it worth getting one?
From what I can gather, most places they offer you discounts with will give you discount with your normal student ID.

I'm in two minds on whether to get one or not.

Most do, not all.

McDonalds does usually, but I find some places refuse to give me a free burger with my student ID and insist on an NUS card.

If your normal student ID says NUS on, then most high street stores will give you student discount with it (bar some including superdrug who require an NUS extra). You will be able to get more student discounts online with an NUS extra though. Bear in mind that to make your £11 back, you will need to spend probably in excess of £100 just to break even. IMO not worth it.

Ah I've used my student ID in Superdrug and McDonalds and never had any problems. The ASOS discount is probably the only thing that's appealing to me at the moment!

I have one, so far I've only used it on ASOS but I do quite a bit of internet shopping so that's the only reason I bought it.

I tried using my student ID at my local Superdrug but they said no, and I've heard there's a few resturants and cafes near me that only accept NUS cards.

easily done though. i probably did that within my first term with little bits here and there on the occastional stock up of toothpaste etc in superdrug, new clothes for the wet/cold welsh winters that i didnt have beforehand etc. just an example.

for a while my union would only let people in to events with some form of nus so check that theres not rules like that for your union as well if you decide against an nus.

also as for whether or not you can just use a uni card, it depends on an area/the shop. best idea maybe is to try with a uni card and if say a large amount of shops you use regularly say you need nus then get it. if not then use the uni card

i just used my normal student id, topshop accepted it...i'm happy

I've found that the cinema chains can be picky, often only accepting NUS Extra cards. My union takes £2-3 off entry fees, I've easily made up the cost using that.

You might also want to put some consideration into whether the NUS is an organisation you want to be supporting.

I'm finding that lots of new uni ID cards don't have dates on them, so more and more shops are insisting on having an NUS card before offering discount. It depends on the area you're in, you'll probably have to look around a bit to work it out for you locally

I was wondering the same thing But it does appear that tho most shops take student id as proof ...you do get more discount and are only able to get discount online with a nus card.

Would have thght that with xmas coming up...would easily be able to save your £11 back :D

Places seem to be getting stricter so I'd say it's worth it for using online, and Aldo and Superdrug only accept NUS recently.
