Help with Marantz CD player

Hi, this may be the wrong place but I thought you techie guys might know.

I was given a Marantz CD player (didn't really know what I was getting, lol, assumed it was just a stand alone one). It has no speakers, but I have the wires.

The guy said something about needing an amplifier and speakers.

Now, my questions are: does it need an amplifier? and, what type/make of speakers do I need?

I have googled it but I'm still not entirely sure about an amplifier being essential.

Thanking you in advance.

Whats the model number? Im 99% sure youll need both an amp and speakers as marantz tend to make stand alone cd players (very good ones I might add)

Good cd player. You definitely require an amp and speakers though
Really down to how much your willing to spend on some. I suspect ebay will be your best bet

That is a CD player only and will require some sort of amp/speaker combination to hear the music. (Although I do believe it has a headphone socket). Do you have anything like that that has an 'aux in', one red, one white, pair of sockets?

I have one of them. Excellent sound. The make of the amp and speakers are up to you. I have a NAD amp and Wharfdale speakers myself.

Although if you have a line in options on a stand alone unit you could connect it to that and use the internal amp and speakers from that unit. Though it would be a waste of the superb sound of the Marantz
  • Hi, thanks for your replies. I have a pair of cables that are red one end white the other.
Can it be any amp or do only certain ones work with it?
It's a good idea to look on ebay, I'm also going to try the local paper.
    Thanks again.

  • I'd suggest getting down to your local Richer Sounds. Something like the kit bundled together under "Hi-Fi System 1" here would be ideal. If the Cambridge AM1 wasn't in stock then the slightly cheaper Cambridge A1 would also be a great choice. If you didn't need the iPod dock you could swap it for speaker cable and a phono lead to connect the CD player. Richer Sounds do Cambridge Audio speaker cable from £0.99 per metre and a Cambridge Audio phono lead for £9.99.

If you don't need the iPod dock, it retails at £14.99 so a phono lead and 3 metres of cable seems a fair exchange.

Can be sorted for [ relatively ] next to no money. Look on ebay :

    - put in these two words .. .. amp speaker .. .. then search
    - click on auctions only
    - click on nearest first

Example this one and dozens of others can be had for almost nothing. People can not post them, they are more just happy to get someone to call & cash on collect.

If you don't see what you want within driving distance the first week, you will almost certainly see several in the next few weeks.

N.B. This search by auction / postcode can be used for any product that is difficult to package / or / post.

    - large CRT monitor

    - big fridge

    - the amp has only three out red / white and [ digital audio ] black

That is a respectable CD player.
It is a "hi-fi separate" and so needs an amplifier and speakers to go with it.
You could go to Richer Sounds if you want to spend money on something new (probably £2-300), or you could look for 2nd hand.
If you've got a telly or AV system with audio inputs (they'll be red and white "phono" plugs too; red goes to red and white goes to white), then you could plug it in there.
