"letter drop" to find property

I was on the phone this morning with a EA and mentioned that they are doing a letter drop for one of their clients, in the same sort of area's and house's we are looking at, and said that anything left over we could have a look at.
i was pretty surprised that EA's did letter drops still, in the past a friend of mine found his house via this method. me and my girlfriend have begun really narrowing in on what type of house and where we want so i though if EA's do it why don't we do it, we might get more of a response than a EA if we made sure it sounded personal rather than like someone trying to make money, we want a house to live in.
has anyone done letter drops and did you have any success?

"... we want a house to live in" you say.....
...so do the EA's clients, the ones on behalf of whom he's doing the drop.
If you do a drop, potentially the seller will have one buyer prospect - you. If an EA does a similar drop, they might have more than one potential buyer for the style of house concerned.
I'd respond more favourably to the prospect of a few buyers rather than just one.0 -

Had from local EA through our door last week. Coincidentally looking at property pages in paper found out that house on the street just gone on market as has one on next street. If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0 -
An estate agent is doing this for me next week. My next door neighbour found her house this way.
I've had a go at putting letters through postboxes myself; one person did call me, but their price expectations were sky-high so we didn't take it any further. I mentioned this to the agent who we previously sold through, and he said a letter from an estate agent gets more responses, and vendors are likely to be more receptive to his advice on price comparables.
The danger of putting your own letter through the door is that some vendors will think they can name their price because you're so keen.0 -
My mum did a personal letter drop in a specific cul de sac she wanted to live in and had replies from two owners. One perhapsa little over priced, the second unfortunatly was a little out dated decor wise which put mum off as she just wanted tomove in. So pretty successful in the fact two got back. Bought one near by in the end.0

We sold to people who letter dropped us. They said in their letter that they had buyers and couldn't find a suitable house, our buyer had just pulled out so I sent a text to see if they were still looking. They came round that afternoon and has a second viewing two days later where we agreed price and that was it.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. One of our local estate agents drives me mad by doing this constantly. I must get one from them about once a month saying 'we have buyers looking for property in X Rd! If you wish to sell please contact us.'
Once I can beleive. But monthly for three years? Not entirely convinced...0 -
The thing is everyone has a price, and I think most people will either think it's a marketing ploy by the EAs (my parents had the same thing as docmaggiemay) or accept it's genuine and take the attitude you can have it at 'x' price.
My neighbour (who's lived there nearly 2years) is thinking of selling, but thinks they will get about £270k. If that is true, I would sell for that - I just bought for 220k+10k extra's (a new build, identical to my neighbour). Pie in the sky, but it did make me think what my price would be - especially as I don't want to move at all.0 -
I take a dislike to pretty much all unsolicited mail so any letter drops through my letterbox from EA or private will be straight in the recycling.0
