As the post title says. In light of the announcements today regarding capping of benefits and the axing of child benefit for some sections of the UK population I would like some opinions on the now scrapped Health in Pregnancy grant. For those who do not know what this is ( I didn't know it existed until it was scrapped) It is a one of payment of £190 to pregnant women and is not means tested.
You may have heard that the government intends to stop paying the Health in Pregnancy Grant for women who reach the 25th week of their pregnancy on or after 1 January 2011.
If you reach the 25th week of your pregnancy before 1 January 2011 you will still be able to get the grant, as long as you meet the qualifying rules. You can read about the budget announcement by following the link below.
Until the Health in Pregnancy Grant stops being payable, the information on this page still applies[/quote]
That means roughly women due before end of this tax year are still eligible.
First I knew about this was on Friday when I was seeing my midwife, she said I had to remember and bring my bank details to next appointment as she will have my HiP grant form which is £190 Cash the government transfers right into a bank account to help with costs of being pregnant. Apparently she completes it, I sign and then its sent away with cash arriving 2-3 weeks later by which time I will be closer 30 weeks pregnant.
Now I had no idea about this 'grant' but it strikes me as weird that its not means tested so SamCam and Red Ed's partner could of both claimed it and maybe they did who knows.
What does everyone think, should those with above average income households claim it as entitled? Should the not claim it or a third option claim and donate to charity. If opting for charity could you post and say which one please.
I genuinely have no idea what to do about it, We have sorted the 'big' bits needed for baby, we have a decent income and we certainly don't 'need' it.
Now I can vaguely remember the coalition scrapping it in emergency budget but didn't really pay a great deal of attention. I found this on the direct.gov.uk page quote]You can get the grant if all of the following apply:
- you are at least 25 weeks pregnant
- you have been given health advice from a midwife or doctor to help you and your unborn baby stay healthy during pregnancy
- you are present, 'ordinarily resident' and have a 'right to reside' in the UK - 'ordinarily resident' will depend on your circumstances but it usually means your main home is here

Yes and spend it on yourself/babyI'd claim it, if it's there for the taking.

Seeing as they lost their deposit, I don't see why the state 'top it up'."An arrogant and self-righteous Guardian reading tvv@t".

I didn't quite mean deposit in money terms 0 0

Yes and spend it on yourself/babyOf course I would claim it, and in fact did claim it when the time came. Maybe the question should be "should people from lower income households claim it considering they don't pay enough into the system and are already burdening the state with children they can't afford to support"0
