noisy escort diesel van

Hi, can anyone help me, i have escort diesel van non turbo,power steering bog standard model x reg,was driving up the hill very steady, when this loud rattling started from the cylinder head,its not small ends had that before. any ideas please

thanks hammyman, but its more serious than that,its got louder and i have left it parked up for now,i thought it might be a jumped shim,it sounds cammy to me.

in that case i would whip the cam cover off and have a looksey.

One of the belt tensioners on the way out I'd say. 2 Belts on these IRC... One for the camshaft one for the pump.. Tensioners/Pulleys will start to rattle before they die.

Like said whip the camcover off and have a look...

Cambelt or tensioner. Don't start it until you have checked this out! Been there, done that - expensive.
