Hand luggage query

I'm currently recovering from a severe wrist injury. I'm using a gyroscopic hand exerciser - a palm sized, heavy clear plastic ball with another (opaque) plastic ball inside, inside of which is a gyroscope. I really need to take this with me to continue exercising my hand/arm muscles whilst on holiday. The thing is that it might possibly look a bit odd on an x-ray and I don't want to risk it being confiscated. Do you think it could be taken in hand luggage or should I risk packing it?

Anyone? I go away this week and really need some advice on this ...0

If it were me, I would telephone the airline and ask. Or, alternatively, you can email and enclose a picture so they can see exactly what it is. Feel free to copy and paste mine
Have a great holiday :j Never put tables and chairs in the same room.
If they congregate together for any length of time, they will inevitably hatch plots against you and your pets.

Many thanks - I just had visions of airport security being a little zealous if they can't work out what they're seeing on the x-ray!
I'll try emailing the airline and printing out the reply to take with me!!0 -

if it's in your hand luggage and they can't work out what they're seeing on the X-ray, they'll pull you to one side and ask you to open your bag.
I'd do as already suggested and check with the airline.0 -
I work for Emirates Airlines and what we usually find best to do is to show the check in staff who will usually be able to tell you by physically looking at it what security will say, so make sure you have it to hand but also have space in your suitcase should they say to put it in there.
Usually we find if items are for medical reasons security will let them through if accompanied by a doctors letter explaining what it is and what it is used for.
Hope that helps.0 -
Thanks Sarah - that sounds like the best plan. Hopefully I'll hear back from the airline before I go but if not (maybe even if I do!), then I'll make sure I leave space in my suitcase and speak to the check-in staffI work for Emirates Airlines and what we usually find best to do is to show the check in staff who will usually be able to tell you by physically looking at it what security will say, so make sure you have it to hand but also have space in your suitcase should they say to put it in there.

At Manchester Airport, I was flying with jet2 who say on their website everything you take on board must go into one bag. However, ay the airport, jet2 said that at Manchester airport, on all flights you are allowed to take 1 hand luggage suitcase in the lockers plus another small item (laptop, rucksack etc.) which can go under your seat. So it does not necessarily have to go in your hand luggage suitcase...0

Thanks Louise, but the difficulty is whether I'd be allowed to carry it on board I have or whether I'll have to put it in the suitcase - because they might not allow me to board with it. The item in question has a gyroscope inside and might look odd on the x-ray - I don't want to get to security and have it confiscated when I really need it during the holiday!0 -
I think Sarahl25's suggestion about asking the check-in staff is the right way to go, unless you get a reply from the airline before you go.0

Many thanks to everyone for the suggestions. I got a reply from the airline as follows:
"
Although this is not listed on the airlines restricted items list: http://www.*****airlines.co.uk , because it contains moving parts i would keep it secure in the hold luggage."
Not ideal as I'd hoped to use it in the airport but at least I'll keep myself right!0
