We'll be travelling in June when I know it will be very hot so am thinking of the following itinery:
Fly to San Francisco and stay there 3 nights?
Hire car and spend 7 days driving to Santa Barbara staying en route at Carmel, Monterrey, Big Sur, San Simeon, San Luis Obispo..
Spend 3 further nights at Santa Barbara or San Diego?
Fly to Vegas and stay there for 3 nights
Fly home from Vegas.

Yosemite!
And I would do it the other way around.
Fly into LV
drive to Yosemite, on to SF, then to Monterey.
You can easily do Monterey to San Diego at a leisurely pace with lots of stops, over 3-4 days.
San Diego is lovely, I'd spend the last few days relaxing there.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

dont guarantee on it being very hot in june along the coast we were there in august this year and it was pretty chilly!
San fran - great - you must go to alcatraz - but here again it can be pretty cool - yet go to vegas and you will be baking - when in vegas make sure you go to hoover dam - out of this world - get lots of advice and plan it well - the trip we did was our best holiday ever0 -
hello, I was reading about San Francisco and they discourage everyone to drive in there..
What do you think?
Is it really too difficult? Should I just hire car from LA to SF and return it to car hire agency in SF when saying there 2 days? And then hire another car from SF to go to Vegas?
They say you don't really need car there anyway..Best wins ever:
2012: Holiday to LA for 2 adults +2 kids for 4 days
2013: £2 000 Virgin Holiday Voucher!
2014: $1000 spending money for hols
2015: 8 night holiday to Thailand0 -

You won't need the car while in SF and most hotels will charge you for parking, but I'm not sure that it's worth the hassle of taking it back and picking up another car a few days later.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

San Diego zoo is definitely worth a vist - fantastic there, probably even better if the lions wake up. Last time we were there they had a baby Giant Panda (might be a bit grown up now though!!).What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

In San Francisco, I stay near the airport. Motels/hotels are cheaper, parking is free, and you can keep the car for convenience and for a greater choice of dining opportunities.
If you want to go into the city and avoid parking charges, the public transport from near the airport is good.
