First Capital Connect Complaint

Hi,

I was travelling from Sussex to Manchester this morning and my train to London with First Capital Connect was delayed so I missed my Manchester connection resulting in a significant cost (new ticket).

What's my best method of tackling getting a refund, complaining to FCC?

Did you have a through ticket from Sussex to Manchester? If so you shouldn't have been asked to pay again and a complaint to Virgin is in order.

If you had separate tickets then all you are entitled to is a part refund of your FCC ticket - the 'part' depending on the length of the delay
  • I'll second what dzug's has said, if you had one ticket, you should have been allowed to go on the next available service to Manchester. Write a letter of complaint to Virgin Trains explaining what happened enclosing all you used rail tickets for that journey.

If you were travelling on 2 advance tickets ie Sussex to London and another ticket London to Manchester, then try quoting National rail conditions of carriage '17. A combination of tickets: You may use two or more tickets to travel on one train journey as long as together they cover the entire journey'. Which in theory would give you the same rights as one single direct ticket. Again enclosing all used rail tickets for the journey, this option is a bit of a grey area but you have nothing to lose in trying to get compensation for your delay.

Either way any refund will be in rail vouchers.

Aside from the ticket cost, which should be refunded you are also due a reimbursement for lost time, depending on how late you were. I've claimed from FCC through their website but I'm a season ticket holder. You may be able to do it this way - they give vouchers for this, not a huge amount but it depends on how much time you lost. Worth doing though. I agree you shouldn't have had to pay for a new ticket to Manchester. I'm surprised - or did you just assume you would have to so you paid it?
