ADSL extension advice Please........

Hi,

just wondering if any by engineers or any other technical minded person can just clarify something about adsl extensions.

I have a bt line and I replaced my master socket for a modified btnte5 master adsl one. This enables all extensions to receive a filtered signal and does away with individual broadband filters. Its modified in respect that it allows a fully hardwired extension adsl line to be connected and run to another point.

The question I have is that ideally i want to run this adsl extension to my office, but the best route would be to come outside and underground through trunking into the office wall. this run is only fairly short, say 30ft, but can i use telephone wire of do i really need cat5? My BB runs at 8 MB, but i only really want to do job once....any advice please??

I have also been told that i could use 2 pair twisted telephone cable such that bt runs from exchange and that cat5 cable outside is a lightning risk?

thanks, Gardnt1

This is fine, this is what I am planning to do once my NTL 30 days are up and I move line back to BT.

to be honest any cable run outside is a lightning risk,
The problem with extending the adsl side is that there will be more attenuation on the line. the better solution would be to use a router closest to the BT socket then either run cat5 to your office or even better go wireless, a decent adsl wirless router can be picked up for around£50

I would agree if you don't mind your router near the phone point, but I do not want mine in my front room looking all messy, I want my modem/router in a different room.

Funny thing is, I have a media center PC next to my phone socket in the front room, it connects wireless to the router in another room.

I just prefer a clutter free environment if I can.

hi, i am wireless but just being fussy! the signal to my pc in office is low, wheras to beds upstairs (kids pc's) is max......i am directly under them! i have tried hub in office and sidnal is great to all.

Accosted a bt engineer working nearby today who gave me adsl advice and said the black two wire would be fine for what i wanted..........even gave me a pc outlet box :)
