cheque cashing

i have banked with the alliance and leicester (now santander)for the last 6 years.over this period the bank have automatically sent me new cheque books every month,i have wote numerous cheques over the years starting my new cheque book each time one arrives. since being taken over by santander and because of the phasing out of cheques i now have to order a cheque book myself, when i did this last week i was told that as there are a number of outstanding cheques i could not have one.when i explained that i have not wrote out cheques in order just used any cheque book i had to hand they said they will cancel all cheques that are outstanding up to the last cheque in my last cheque book recieved and issue me with a new one.the problem i have is that i have 4 outstanding cheques from my last cheque book with a payday loan company, does anyone know if the company present the cheques whether they will be honoured now the bank have done this.

  • they will be, because you almost certainly guaranteed it using your cheque guarantee card. regardless of whether or not you cancel the cheques the fact you used the CGC (hence the name) will mean its impossible to stop it and they will be honoured.

i just wondered because i have nt cancelled the cheques the bank have cancelled every uncashed cheque even the ones that are still in my cheque book unwritten and i have to start again when i receive my new cheque book.
  • Is there a reason why you cannot swap the old cheques for the new ones?

i have to let the outstanding cheques clear before i can cash new ones ,the company i have cashed the cheques with don t offer rollovers ,i have spoken to them and they say they have to bank the original cheques i wrote .i ve explained the bank situation to them but they insist they have to bank the original cheques told them they might not clear but they did nt seem that bothered, sure they will be if they bounce though !
  • as I said previously, if you guaranteed the cheque (as in, signed the back) whether you cancel them or not is irrelevent. They bank HAS to honour them, thats the entire point of the guarantee system

The payments won't bounce, as they are backed by your guarantee card. Be very careful though, if you write more than one cheque per day to a payday loan company or encashment service, the bank can void the cheques and return all of them, as you have breached the cheque guarantee scheme. If you don't have funds you will go overdrawn, and if you end up in their collections, you are likely to have your card and chequebook removed due to misuse.
    Best Regards

Guaranteeing the cheque would be where the payee writes the cheque guarantee card number on the back.

Signing on the back used to be used "in the olden days" when a payee could pay the value to another person by writing on the back "pay [name of other person]" and then sign it themselves.

oops my apologies, personally ive never guaranteed one. my theory was right, just my implementation was wrong :)
  • I think because you have used a cheque guarantee card, they still stand whether you have cancelled or not... this is always the way its been with me.
