I fail to see increasing minimum wage to say £10.00 ph would be the disaster that many think.
you miss the point big time

firms can't afford to pay £10pm as a minimum wage.

It was really depressing in the 80s looking for jobs and they were all £2 an hour or less.
Where I live there were still £2/hour jobs advertised in the Jobcentre in 1997. Taxi Office Controllers, night-shift, 40 hours/week.

As I said before, the type of minimum wage jobs would not be affected that much as they could not be exported. OK you 99p burger may have to go up to £1.04 but the savings in benefits would be massive. In effect the taxpayer is subsidising low wages thru the benefits system which is daft.

What about the increased cost to firms?

They will need to find that money from somewhere, not to mention the additional NI they will need to pay on behalf of their employers.

I can see it pushing a lot of small firms to the wall.

the poster lives in Lala Land - yes, let's raise the minimum wage up to £10 per hour. it will only be burgers increasing in price from .99p to £1.04... deluded.

  • Surely there is a difference between a £5.93Ph job and a £10Ph job currently? Wouldn't you then need to increase the £10Ph jobs according, and then so on across the board?

The minimum wage is perfectly fine, People use it as an excuse to be lazy, end of

Can you afford to rent a flat on that income?

Bit tight for one with rent around £80pw but no probs with 2 or 3 sharing.

Anyway, there's over 1 million people on minimum wage and I presume they have some form of accomodation.

OK then, how much would it increase to cost of a burger in your opinion?
The majority of people on minimum wage are also receiving various benefits including housing. If this did not need to be paid then taxes could be reduced across the board including corporation tax which would go some way to subsidise the increased wage bill.

Seems a little unfair for an adult working full time.

Min wage is awful for people who would have earned slightly more than it.

Now that are simply paid the min wage.
