    A spokesman for British Airways last night defended using the 0870 number and said that it helped to offset a small percentage of the costs of running UK-based call centres.

    ... sorry but this is BRITISH Airways isn't it ??? ... not Indian or Bangladesh Airlines .... talk about rip off the customer of the country that the company likes to HIGHLIGHT in its logo !!!!!

    “If anyone has a query, we urge them to call the 0870 number as the call-centre staff can then direct them to the best possible number,” he said.

    .... ye right .... and would that be before or after people have waited in an 'expensive' queue for 20 minutes ???? :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
  • I have signed up with Homecall but am unable to get into saynoto0870 is this a way of stopping users getting alternative no's. I'm having a breakdown with out this service please help
  • bye-the-way the homecall is a package with free normal landline calls so is this a way to get money from me
  • I didn't think it would be published but I thought I would send a letter to The Times yesterday. No, it did not get published, so I thought someone may be interested to read it here;

    Sir,

    Your article on the use of 0870 numbers quotes the spokesman for British Airways defending their decision in using these numbers by stating that it helped to offset a small percentage of the costs of running UK – based call centres and that “if anyone has a query we urge them to call the 0870 number as the call centre staff can then direct them to the best possible number”.

    Can I, through your letters page, please ask British Airways why as Britain’s national carrier does it not follow through this policy in the USA where the consumer there expects and gets a full customer service at the end of a Toll Free telephone number?

    I would also like to point out that as shown by a further news report today, the use of the so called Lo-call 0845 number by the government’s Benefit Agency is netting them some £250,000 in rebates from their telecoms provider and that the DVLA when question by me a couple of years back admitted that they received 1.8 pence a minute for all daytime 0870 calls and that the money is passed to H M Treasury and is used to fund services offered by Government Departments and Agencies thus reducing the need to levy additional revenue from taxpayers!

    The regulator, Ofcom, should outlaw these numbers now, rather than let another 14 months pass with these companies and government agencies continuing to exploit the consumer..

    Yours faithfully

    I think it depends on whether pretty pollyanna has taken a package of calls and broadband or just calls.

    Tiscali's all-inclusive talk package (Anytime Talk is £7.99 a month.

    Tiscali's all-inclusive talk package and 2Mb broadband with unlimited monthly usage (subject to a FUP) is £19.99. This isn't that bad compared to some other providers except I believe their FUP is strict and therefore no good for P2P, etc and going by other forum members, Tiscali's customer services leaves a lot to be desired.

    Where does Tiscali come into the equation?
