What is that fake stone stuff in a gas fire?

They looks like polystyrene stones and they are nasty. They go on the gas fire. What are they called and what can I replace them with?

be aware that the coals are carsinogenic.
dont touch them with your bare hands. use protection.

The fake coals are part of the design of the fire, you can only replace them with the manufacturer's approved spares. Anything else may affect the combustion and be a safety hazard.
