What is that fake stone stuff in a gas fire?

They looks like polystyrene stones and they are nasty. They go on the gas fire. What are they called and what can I replace them with?

The fake coals are part of the design of the fire, you can only replace them with the manufacturer's approved spares. Anything else may affect the combustion and be a safety hazard.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0
