Graphics Card

Hi,

I have a Dell GX520 and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what would be a good 3D graphics card for it.

Regards.

From that link it says you have a pci-e 1x slot
    and a pci slot

You are stuck with trying to find a pci gfx card and they are not very good.

This is the about the pinacle of computer gfx I think you can hope for

This will probably play the sims, but doom3 is not going to happen.

If its just for multimedia and trying to get more connections

    should do the job.
  • Also make sure that you have decent enough power supply as graphics cards can really tax them too!!

I would think that if you play games sometimes that a Nvidia 7600GST,7600GT,7900GS or an ATI 1650 PRO or X1800GTO should be ok for most people. These range from about 90 to around 150 pounds. Overclockers UK were doing 7900GS cards for around 100 quid but now they have sold out!!:( Would have bought one immediately if my computer had PCI-E!! :(

If your budget is lower than this a Nvidia 7300GT or a X1300 PRO should do the job as these are available for around 60 quid.

None of those cards will fit in the stated PC as it only has a PCI-E 1x slot (not suitable for graphics cards) and a PCI slot.
  • Oops!! I suppose the best bet would be the 6200 PCI(not express!!)

  • Thanks.

Is the GF4 6200 better than the FX 5200?

    Cheers.

  • Or would i be better off trying to get a new motherboard that will take all the other bits and fit a PCI-Express card? Am i right in thinking that my PC has a BTX motherboard?

  • The 6200 is a Nvidia 6 series card and is probably the most powerful PCI card currently available!!

I can play UT2004 at decent settings on a 6200 PCI-Express card though!! I think the PCI version maybe a bit slower though due to the lower bandwidth of PCI versus AGP or PCI-Express!

If you are playing alot of games I suppose that buying a new PCI-Express motherboard would be a better bet!

However this may be of interest to you:

I would imagine that you would need a micro-atx motherboard and a low profile garphics card?

You are likely to come into some problems replacing the motherboard.

Dell have a tendency to use their own psus and motherboards, so while every thing looks like it going to work, it will fail when you come to try to fit things.

As long as you budget for a new power supply and possibly case (depending how btx it is) if it does go wrong, you should be fine. You might be needing a new power supply anyway, since that the quoted 230w is not up to much.

I have just had too many problems with dells as soon as you take the side of the case off.

See my post that I made last month

There is a great review on Graphics cards on Tom's Hardware which should help you greatly. They have cards for all budgets.

    Hope this helps.
