Dreams Mattress

we've been to Dreams today to look at a new mattress for our sons double bed - after chatting with the salesperson about mattresses in general she put me right ( or did she) on my bad back problem - i sleep on a firm tufted mattress which I thought would do my back good but I still wake up with back ache - she advised giving my mattress to my son & buying a new one for me - its a pocket sprung mattress with a layer of memory foam on top - as I sleep on my stomach would this mattress be advisable - I couldn't see a 'make', possibly it was Dreams own, it was half price, down to #349 - any comments/ advice would be advisable

She was right, but stay well away from Dreams. If you do a search for them in the MSE forums you will see why.

They have a fake price promise where they re-name almost all of their products, so you can't buy them anywhere else. They then make up sky high RRP's, and then tell you that they have a half price sale. They get around the law by selling the products in one or two stores for a couple of weeks a year at the full price.

So they are very expensive, but due to the power of advertising they get away with it.

The true vale of the mattress would probably be half of the £349.

If you want good quality at a low price then stay away from big brand names, and big retailers. Instead shop on line, but make sure that the seller has a good returns policy in case you don't like it. Then speak to the seller, as it will be in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.

you say to shop on-line & avoid big, brand names - but i haven't a clue about which brands that arn't so well known are good & which ones to avoid

You would have to be insane to buy a mattress online INMHO!

The point of somewhere like Dreams is you can go try it and then buy exactly the same one! With something you will be spending hours on for the next ten years or more its too risky!

I replaced a while ago with a dreams one, its pocket sprung with a memory foam top layer. I don't front sleep but tend to sleep a lot on the same side, rarely on my back. Its firm enough to support well but as I am a bit boney in places the memory foam softens the pressure points and I have never been more comfortable in my life. Its also superbly made and well worth the £500 (at the time) for a king sized one.

I wouldn't get too hung up on Dreams ethics or pricing, which retailer doesn't have some dubious angle these days? we are not stupid. I think of it as 1.5p per hour over the next 10 years for good sleep in comfort, on balance its worth that much to me.
European for 3 weeks in August, the rest of the year only British and proud.

half price? 50% off? lowest price ever?
take no notice of any of these claims. from who/where ever.

its the price you pay that counts. you cannot even compare dreams prices with others, cause they are nearly all dreams branded.
    its a huge scam/con.
    Get some gorm.

Have you thought about memory foam matress which are fairly inexpensive now. A good make double for around 160/70 pounds. Make sure that it is 5/6 inches deep. They are sometimes displayed in stores for you to try them out.
    I hope this helps.

Actually you would have to be insane to buy from the big chain stores like Dreams. Especially as their so called sale prices are often double what you can pay for the equivalent (even the same brand). And you can buy a similar spec from a smaller independent manufacturer for as little as a third of the Dreams sale prices.

There are many independent retailers who don't use the same dubious sales tactics used by the big chain stores.

As for trying a bed out in a shop, this can only give you a very rough idea. You need to be able to sleep on a mattress for a few nights to know for sure.

A memory foam mattress that is only 5 or 6" deep would be completely useless. At that depth you would be able to feel the base underneath.

What do you mean by a good make?

    In your opinion.....

In fact there are some very good thin all foam memory foam mattress on the market. The Memory Flex from Health Beds, rated very highly from which magazine. 20cm deep I believe. The 160-170 pound mark does seem rather cheap though to me.

Mattresses do not need to be as deep as they are, but 1 company started it and it looked better value for money then the thinner ones. So they all followed suit. Mugs eye full is the term used I think.

Not just in my opinion, it's a fact. 5" or 6" isn't deep enough to stop you feeling the base underneath. Even cheap and nasty, bottom of the range budget mattresses are at least 6" deep.

The Memoryflex is 8" deep, which is deep enough. It has 6" of reflex foam, with a 2" deep layer of memory foam on top.

A memory foam mattress needs 2" of memory foam in order to do what the memory foam is designed to do (mould to your body and spread your weight out, prevening pressure points). Due to the properties of memory foam you sink most of the 2" into the memory foam. It's the spring or reflex foam layer underneath that gives you any bounce, and helps to provide support. It also determines the firmness of the mattress. 3" of reflex foam simply isn't enough to do this.
