It has now hit me...really need your advice

My husband and some friends went on a motorbike trip to Germany last week; devastatingly one of our friends had an accident and was killed. Spending time with his mother while she has tried to sort out all of his insurances (she was next of kin as he was divorced) has hit home to me how inadequate my husband and i are insured. Apart from the mortgage being paid if one of us goes, we have nothing else to help the family (we have two small children). What makes it worse is that my husbands past times include motorbikes (on and off road), car track days and paramotoring!!
Any ideas at all as to who the he!! would insure him!? I am a stay at home mum so my 'activities' are not so dangerous, but i would ideally like us both to be covered for our children's sakes.
Any advice gratefully received

  • What an awful thing to have happened to your friend. Apart from the insurance, don't forget to get a will if you don't already have one. The weekly e-mail from Martin has a link to free wills for a charity donation. Even if the insurance is in place a will makes everything easier. Don't forget about putting life insurance in trust to minimise inheritance tax. Any good insurer will be able to set this up.

Hi So sorry to hear about the death of your friend, and it is common that such events do make us examine our own provisions. There are insurers who can/will insure for your pastimes but your premiums could be high - some insurers may even exclude cover for that particular activity.

I would suggest you see and Independent Financial Adviser with plenty of experience in the Protection Market, who will advise you on the most suitable insurer.

Policy wise there are lots of options open to you, but to discuss in depth would be outwith the scope of this forum. If you need to find a local IFA first ask for recommendations from friends and family, and if that fails you could look on yell.com or www.adviserfinder.com
