Odd that when I talk to real people in the real world who really would like to buy their first home and really have the income levels to do so, the stumbling block is getting together a deposit when either they are renting themselves and/or they have children.

They moan that prices are high for what they would like to buy, they talk of better mortgage deals that seem to have gone but the thing that is stopping them buying is the lack of deposit. On their incomes they could afford repayment mortgages and mortgage insurance but they haven't been able to save deposits.

    Cheaper house prices

Fortunately it's only a select few that try and twist things or post loaded polls instead of discussing facts.

Is it a worthless poll would you say?

I only ask as it seems to have got people into such a tizz. I don't understand why really. Most polls ask a certain group of people something, otherwise there, in many cases, would be no point in the poll. If you want to ask a certain group of people something, whats the point in asking everyone else who doesn't fit in that group?

The problem seems to be that you want to answer on behalf of other people?

I got a questionnaire today at work. Was asking for specific people in a specific earnings band for responses. I didn't fit in that band....should I be complaining that I should still be able to fill it in and I should be able to put my thoughts down on behalf of people earning 80k plus?

A return to lax mortgage lending?

It makes perfect sense. Got offered a mortgage in principle where I turned them when they wanted to give me over £200k. Thought it too much to borrow and got them to change it to £185k during the meeting.

Although you could really have just waited until proceeding to final application for that. But anyway.
Had been saving for a few years I have eclipsed the 25% deposit. However I still have to wait for prices to come down to buy.

Nothing you want for £185,000 then? In the meantime you're paying someone else's mortgage and losing out via inflation on your savings, as its not like interest rates are much to speak of at the moment.

You don't "have" to wait either as you could easily get your first place for that amount, even in London. OK it won't be a "dream home" but first homes rarely are IMO.
PS I don't want to live in Hounslow not even for my first home it is a dive. I have had friends who made that mistake and now they can't sell.

Fair enough, I thought that's where you were.

The question remains - what if prices don't drop as you think they will (hell, you're already 10 months past the "50% drop" prediction), when are you going to given in and get on with it?

there is nothing wrong with the poll.

the intentions and purpose of the poll are the issue.

starting a poll because Hamish said something or because he started another one isn't reason for a poll just because he's symbolised as a propagandist or whatever he's being called at the moment.

Being a FTB new to all this I didn't know how much I could borrow, so the application in principle was important for my planning and to check no surprises I'd missed.

Not in traditional rented accommodation, my rent is exceptionally good for where I live. Can save loads as well and not paying someones mortgage.

My interest rate is good and magnified more as the deposit is against house price inflation rather than normal inflation.

The slash in interest rates and all the other stimulus halted the crash for a while. That ended or ending with the correction started a few months ago here.

Not going to risk my deposit buying early so will be waiting for prices to come down a little more yet, till I can afford a 2 bed.

It's a great poll. You only have to look at how many people have contributed to see its continued popularity. It's up a massive 62 in favour now.

And it rather contrasts with Hamish's rubbish poll in which only 4 people voted. And 3 of those votes were made by himself.
you should look at the voters on this poll

Graham, didn't you respond yet you are already a part homeowner?
Why did you, your not a FTBer

There's nothing wrong with an open poll with all the available answers.
A loaded poll is totally pointless in my opinion

What difference does it make if your a FTBer, Investor, Upgrader, downgrader, shared ownership pwner etc etc etc?
If you are considering and in a position to buy then that is relevant.

I remember a poll on here a while ago asking what people thought would happen to house prices.
It was heavily weighted on prices falls and did not cater for all the potential answers. totally pointless.

There are a number of people on this thread that have pointed out the flaws in the poll options.
I would hope that people can understand why there are flaws in the poll to make them better understand the impacts

I don`t know why, but this post is making me :rotfl:

    "Hamish`s rubbish poll"

It`s also amusing how some peeps are seriously critisising the poll`s validity.

Mind you, looking at the results, some of the votes do look a tad suspicious.
