Does your bank statement not list the iban?0

You need your account number in the IBAN format. This should appear on your statement. It must look exactly like this:
GBxxAAAAssssssnnnnnnnn
where xx are check digits,
AAAA is a four-letter code for Santander UK,
ssssss is (normally) the UK sort code,
and nnnnnnnn is your (UK) account number.
You also need Santander's BIC, which may be ABBYGB2L, though I do not know whether they use others, for example, for ex-Alliance & Leicester Accounts.
The French bank is almost certainly trying to send the funds by a modern, cheap, SEPA Credit Transfer. This requires Santander to be SEPA-compliant. However, Santander UK does not seem to be a registered participant. See here for the current list of participants:

The French bank will therefore have to use the old, expensive, SWIFT transfer method. Getting them to understand this may be difficult. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

If you follow the link that Stclair gave you it gives a site in which you can enter your sort code and account number and it generates the correct IBAN for you. Hopwever if the problem is as described by youngnick, it can't help with that. Only talking to the French bank will help. The French do hate to be swerved from their bureaucracy so I wish you luck.0
