Cat fleas, please help!

We adopted two female indoor rescue cats in January. As they are indoor cats the vet said we didn't have to deflea them however I think one of our cats has caught fleas. I have found more than one beastie which have now identifies as a flea type creature in my house in the past two weeks and have noticed that one of my girls has some tiny scabs which I had previous thought were play bite marks round her neck.

I wonder if anyone has any hint/tips about what to do next? Am so worried about this I can't sleep! Should I call the emergency line for our vets this morning? We pay monthly visits to the vet for the weight loss clinic but vet hasn't spotted anything. Feel like an awful owner :( Should I go to Asda/Tesco for some flea powder or would it be better to wait until the vet prescribes something? I don't mind paying the money for the vet to come out but I don't want to sounds stupid. Also am not sure if the cheaper supermarket products work well or would they just traumatise the cats and I would have to buy the vets stuff anyway.

  • We use Spot On for our cat and have found it to be effective. We also use a flea trap like this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/STV-Flea-Killer/dp/B001A2XCLQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286086247&sr=8-1 to catch any of the beasties that may be in the house.

Thanks! I have ordered the flea trap and have checked that they have spot on on asda online. Would hate to think of my cat in pain. She doesn't look/act ill at the moment, thank goodness, although I'm sure she'll be relieved when the fleas are gone!

    Hi betti

Do not waste your money on the likes of bob martin and other supermarket brands - they do not work.

Fleas does not warrant calling out the vet for an emergency, it can wait until tomorrow.

You need to treat the house with Indorex (or similar but cannot think of the other named spray) to eradicate the problem and treat your cat with either Advocate/Stronghold or frontline (although some people say frontline does not necessarily work all that well depending on the resistance of the fleas). These are all available at the vets or in some pharmacies or you can try shopping online (but take into account delivery times if you want to treat asap).

Good luck, I hope you get it sorted.

I use frontline on my cat, as per the directions on the packet, I get it from my local vet, but you can buy it online.

There is no need to bother the vet today, ring on Monday, and talk to them.

Many thanks for all your replies. I've taken down the names of all the recommended cat flea treatments and go through them with the vet. The flea trap should also come next week so looking forward to catching the pests. My poor wee cat :(

  • Those flea-traps can make for a bit of cheap entertainment but they are utterly useless for getting to grips with an infestation. Cancel that order and buy Indorex and a treatment for the cats from the vet.
