Voluntary work

Hi
Was recently made redundant, and hate being unemployed. Thought i would do some voluntary work to gain experience and to ease the boredom of the day.
A friend told me today that i would lose JSA as i would not be available for work. Anybody know for sure the rules? Thank You

You do need to be available to accept a job, and to look for work while in receipt of JSA. But....many people work full time hours and still manage to volunteer. As ong as your volunteer work doesn't interfere with your ability to look for work, or accept a job - shouldn't be a problem? Just check with your adviser as to what type of hours might be allowed for volunteer work.

I just had to sign a form stating that I would give up the volunteering if it clashed with a job or an interview, it was very straightforward.

These are the rules, regarding availability
21265 Claimants do not have to be able to take up any employment at once on any day
that they have caring responsibilities or are doing voluntary work.
But this only applies if claimants are willing and able to
    1
take up employment on being given one week’s notice and
    1.
    2. attend for an interview in connection with the opportunity of any such
    2
employment within 48 hours’ of being given notice .
