library say I didn't return books

Hi
I've had a letter today about 2 outstanding library books.
I borrowed the books and they were due back on a Monday. On the Saturday I tried to renew them. 1 I renewed and the other I couldn't renew as someone has requested it. As I couldn't get to the library on the Monday I posted both books through the letterbox on the Sunday.
I checked today on line and I've got fines owing on both books. (£5.20 and £3.60) It is a large letterbox with a notice inviting people to post books when they are closed.
How can I prove I returned the books?
Should I renew them on line tonight or by doing this are they going to say I must have them if I renewed them? If I don't renew, then the fine will keep building up until I can sort it out.
Any ideas? Thank you

So a week yesterday you tried to return the books and on sunday you put them through the box,
i cant see a way for you to prove they were returned, onlything i can think of is they werent put onto the system as being returned0 -

Yes happened to me too, mistakes happen and they tend to err on the side of caution."The whole problem with the world is that fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves, but wiser people so full of doubts."

It was about a month ago hence the fine. They were due back on a Monday. I renewed one on the Saturday before but as the other was requested by another user I couldn't renew it so I made a special trip on the Sunday and put both through the letter box. As I had returned them I had no need to check on line until I got the letter today. Sorry if my first post was a bit unclear.
I'll let you know what happens on Monday, thank youDoing voluntary work overseas for as long as it takes .......

I had a similar situation a few years back only I had to pay the cost of the replacement.
Any a few months down the line I saw the book on the shelves and took the book to the counter and explained what had happened, they checked the receipt book and gave me my money back!2014 Target;

Libraries do make mistakes!
Some years ago on different dates I had reminders about overdue books, the first one I told them the book had been returned (which it had been) and was told "Sorry, computer error". 2nd reminder was for books I'd never taken out and this time was told "Very sorry, please ignore, big computer error".If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
