I used to work in a library and occassionally a book was put back on the shelf without being scanned as returned.

Just phone them or pop in tomorrow and explain and they will probably find the books on the shelf.

If they can't be found, most libraries will give you the benefit of the doubt as it isn't worth them losing a family of library users for the sake of a book that probably costs a few quid.

Thank you for all the replies

I went to the library and found one of the books on the shelf. It turns out there was a computer fault on the day I returned them - there was a notice apologising about the error. The librarian was very helpful and removed both books and fines from the ticket. She said they were trying to check before letters went out but some slipped through.

I did learn a couple of useful things because of this. I can borrow a book from one library and return it to another, so no need to go all the way into town, I can just drop it off at the village library. Also the village library is open until 7.00 pm two evenings a week and 5.00 pm the other four evenings. It seems the library service has entered the 21st century.
