Television Needed - CRT or LCD or Plasma

Hey :)

We're after a TV but need it pretty soonish so I was wondering if you know of any high street retailers which have good offers on these at the moment - it doens't need to be a plasma or lcd but obviously if this turns out to be cheapest we'll get it. Looking for a screen size around 24" plus :o

Thanks in advance :D

Sophie :)

How much are you looking to spend? Also, is space an issue?
  • If it's simply the cheapest TV you are after then go for a CRT...they can't give the things away these days!

Space no issue, budget is not really set but as low as can be for a decent size as we're planning on getting a projector but not for another 6-12 months :o
  • Me and the OH recently bought a new telly...we don't like plasma or LCD that much (the pictures in the showrooms always look crappy) so we went for the Samsung SlimFit one - it's 32", HD ready, and is styled to look like an LCD or Plasma from the front - but it's CRT. We paid £450 in Comet, but you could get it for £400ish on Amazon.

It is a great looking telly, lovely vibrant picture, sounds absolutely fine.

What Comet did say was after this season's stock of CRT TVs, they're getting rid of them altogether as technology is moving on and they're only gonna stock plasma/LCD.

Funnily enough - we got rid of our projector to buy this TV, as we couldn't find a way to hide the projector the way we wanted to! Plus, we didn't realise when we bought it, but projector lamps need replacing every 2 years or so, and some of them cost £200-300!!!

That siad, if you're trying to save your pennies...you could buy something like a Bush 28" for about £150 in Argos or Tesco...easily...

We've just got a plasma and I have to say the quality is far superior to the 27" CRT we had. Although if you're looking for anything below 37" I don't think they make plasmas that small any more. So below 37" it is better to get LCD (or CRT if you prefer but I don't know if any are HD ready) and 37" and above go for plasma.

Showrooms can show poor picture quality on LCD's/Plasma's. This is normally because the signal quality in some showrooms are poor. CRTs don't highlight this poor quality signal as they are an inferior technology to LCD/Plasma. LCD/Plasma will highlight poor signal/quality more (put !!!!!! in, you get !!!!!! out). If you plan to watch a lot of DVD's or go HD (when not a rip off) or DTV (Freeview), I would go LCD/Plasma (I did, 1x43" plasma, 1x32" LCD, 1x6" LCD).

If just analog with RF connection then CRT as quality could be poor. I would also be careful with buying uncommon brands at cheap prices, with Plasma/LCD, you do actually get what you pay for.

    My recommendations....Plasma - Pioneer/Panasonic, LCD - Samsung.

Samsung make two HD Ready CRT TVs. It osunds like that may be what Sir_Bargains-A-Lot has as they cost around £400-450. Some people have had geometry issues with them though. If you look on http://www.avforums.com there are lots of threads about them.

BTW CRT is definately not an inferior technology to LCD or Plasma. Broadcasters still use CRt for mointoring as they give better pictures than LCD or Plasma. The main reason they are becoming less common is that people want bigger TVs and big CRTs take up huge amounts of space and are incredibly heavy. Of course LCDs and Plasmas also cost more so the margins are bigger for the manufactureres and retailers. Again there is endless discussion of this on Avforums

This is the one we bought today from Tesco and it's brilliant for £179. :T I just don't quite understand the row of blue LED lights on the front are they for decoration or what :rotfl:

Thanks for your help everyone :D
