Windows 7 Starter - start-up problems

A few days ago, as I switched off for the night my netbook said it was downloading updates (can't remember how many). I left it to do so, and when I came back the machine had powered down so I assumed it had done whatever it needed to do.

Ever since then, when I switch on I get a screen message saying "Preparing to configure Windows". After about a minute this changes to "Configuring Windows Updates. 0% Complete. Do not turn off your computer". This hangs indefinitely, staying at 0% complete, until eventually (about five mins) I flick the power button, after which when it comes back on it says "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes". Then it lets me in to what looks like normal functions.

It is annoying having to go through this palaver every time I switch on, and I don't even have a cursor while it is hanging so couldn't do anything except switch off even if I wanted to.

Any ideas what has happened, and how to get out of it? Thanks for any help.

I'm using a 3 Mobile Broadband dongle, and I have a Sony Viao netbook.

Edited to add that when I switch off at night now, it always says it is downloading two updates. It gives no indication that these are not working, and powers down when it appears to have finished downloading them. Bit of a coincidence though that every night it has two updates.

I forgot on Saturday night and was too fed up on Sunday, but this morning I went into My Computer to find the system restore bit, and spotted a Windows Updates option somewhere in there (can't remember where as I was fiddling around).

Anyway, long story short, it worked . Don't know why it wouldn't download the updates automatically as it usually does on shutdown, but it has now done the biz and on re-start instead of hanging at 0% it delivered up to 100% then started up normally. Phew!

Happened to me as well - I think an update from a few days ago didn't complete properly and tries to run again every time you restart. Running Update again seems to sort it.
