How long should Maestro Number be?

Hey.
I have a Yorkshire Bank Maestro Card. I have just noticed that it has 19 digits for the card number compared to the usual 16.
Is this normal?
Normally I wouldn't be bothered, but one website I used recently had a character limit and I couldnt enter all the digits from my card.
I was just wondering whether this was unique to YB and could cause some problems in the future or some other banks had 19 digits on their Maestro or other cards.

Should definately only be 16, are you sure the extra 3 are the card number and not something else? Last 4 digits should relate to your Account Number.
I don't have my Clydesdale Bank Maestro yet so can't comment on that.0 -
Yeah sure, they are all in one row, linked together, 19 digits.
I hope this isn't going to cause problems0 -

I assume the 1st set of numbers identify the issuing bank, eg Yorkshire?
The 2nd set of numbers is one digit (the number 2 in my example above) away from my sort code.
The 3rd set of digits is my 8 digit current account number.Last 4 digits should relate to your Account Number.0 -
Ah okay, sorry
TBH I was using a Visa card to base what I said (Don't have my Maestro yet) so what I just said was probably useless0 -
I put through switch and maestro paymets at work, some have 16 digits, some 19. It doesn't seem to matter to the machine.0

I think they vary - RBS/NatWest are 16 like Visa, i think the others are longer.
Here is a Barclaycard guide to Maestro

Well mine has 18 in e blocks of 6
Block 1 4 digits and 40(HSBC)
Block 2. 3 for branch identifier and 2 of account number
Block 3 remaining 6 digits of account number.
I suspect the initial numbers may ahe something to do with being a UK card and /or may contain check digits depending on the modulus check used by Maeastro. Could length be governed by thr account numbering system used by a bank. GIro and some others use a 9 digit system.0 -
Well, thanks for all the replies. Just ordered a book from Amazon and it went through fine.
The other website just must have been poorly designed when it came to payment methods.0
