I just want to give a quick update, just in case someone thinks BT are able to resolve the issues they have themselves created, and deal with complaints effectively....

I now have the new line, working fine.
However the non-existing debt if being pursued by debt collectors. I contacted them, but they wanted my details to discuss, and the least thing I want is to have my name linked to a debt that does not exist.....

I get letters every week, and they even phoned once (will ask for advice on a different thread, this is just to put on record how useless BT are, and I'm going to transfer to another company very soon).

PS the debt is in the name of the business that bt transferred the line to by mistake, but at my address, and linked to my phone number.

The letters from the debt collection agency may be ignored, if you want to because they are not letters to you. They are wrongly addressed.

You could and probably should however write to them stating same - the debt is not for you. There is no such person at this address. Any further letters, calls or action will be considered to be harrassment, they should cease immediately and refer the matter back to their client. Should the DCA continue, there can be some hefty legal penalties for that. They will probably stop.

Don't bother trying to explain what happened to the DCA - they're not interested and it's not relevant anyway. It's not your debt, period.

Any calls - you simply need to say "business name" does not operate here, you have the wrong number, and hang up. If you have caller ID you can just ignore the calls if you recognise the incoming number.

If writing the letter takes you half an hour, a fee of perhaps £20 might be reasonable, so produce an invoice and send it to BT. You really ought to get the regulator involved too as the scale of this mess up is beyond belief and may get compensation that way.

    Hi Terra_ferma,

It sounds like the debt was passed to the collection agency in error. If you send me in your details using the link found in my profile, I'll get this sorted for you.

    Thanks

    "The debt was passed ...."

    What debt?

BT had associated the OP's number with a business and passed the business's debt to the DCA. As the OP is not the business, how will the Op sending you his details help?
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Thank for the advice.
In the past I tried to speak to BT on several occasions, but as it's a different department dealing with businesses, and they had no record of what happened, never got anywhere with them.

I've never found a company with a customer service so rude, ignorant and useless. I don't say things like that lightly, I don't normally post to moan about companies, and before this issue I've never had any problems with BT.
(the BT rep on this forum was helpful, but it should not come to that).

In the past a new neighbour got both my gas and electricity accounts switched to her name by mistake, giving the wrong address, but I got that sorted reasonably painlessly, with all companies involved doing their bit. Nobody implied I was lying, like BT did (I must have closed the account, nothing to do with them, can't help me).

This experience has been very stressful for me because what was just a simple mistake, became a major issue, only because BT's staff were unhelpful. My partner and myself don't have a habit of shouting at people over the phone, but we were driven to that because their attitude was terrible.
The stress kind of never went away because this cost me money, losing a deal that gave me free calls that I now have to pay for, and mainly because of the many letters from DCAs (at least two have been sending letters).
Glad I will soon stop any dealings with them.

I kept the account with them for a year, even though it was supposed to be without an early closure penalty because I'm certain that if I closed it they would charge me and have no record that they should not....
    but now I'm FREEEEE :j
(well as soon as I get rid of the DCA)

    ...rant over
  • You should solve this problem as soon as problem Else they they will charge you for whatever you have used for making calls at the end. It will be a huge amount for you to pay.

is this a proper post or are you just posting nonsense to get your post count up?
