harvested onions some are soft

Throw away as they're no good, perhaps they were ready when they were a little smaller... keep your good ones and perhaps next time just pop your finger in the soil to check how hard they are when they're getting bigger.
Although I'm sure you know, I'm just mentioning for everyones benefit about yellowing / dying leaves. Thats when to uplift and lie on ground if dry enough so that you can store them easily
Maybe what you knew already but soft onions, compost.
