My son has finished his studies at university. I am disabled and he is claiming carer's allowance. He would like to claim Income Support, but has £8000 savings. Can he pay the £8000 to the student loans company and after that claim income support? He will not be able to go to work for a long time. Thanks in advance.

No, he cannot pay a non priority debt off in order to claim benefits. The £8000 will lead to a £8 per week reduction from his IS entitlement.Gone ... or have I?0

He can claim IS even with £8000 savings, he will have a deduction of £8.00 made in respect of that though0
