How often should I worm my puppies?

Options
Hello folks

Looking for some advice on puppy worming please. We have two pups, 11 months old and 6 months old.

We have been worming them with Drontal each month on the advice of the vet. I was wondering if that's the normal or whether you follow a different pattern.

We also use Advocate once a month for flea and lice prevention. Again, is that the best frequency please?

By the way, we have been buying the products from the vets and the prices are  So happy to have seen all your recommendations for online providers - thank you :D

  • You want to try petmeds.co.uk as it is loads cheaper than the vets. I get drontal and frontline from them - don't know if they stock Advocate as have never checked. They tend to send you emails periodically giving free p&p or 10% off as well. I usually club together with some neighbours to get over the p&p charges if no free p&p offers at the time.

We wormed ours every 4 weeks until they were 6 months and now do every 6-8 weeks.

    Hi,

We deworm and de-flea our dog every three months (a frontline pipette once a month). This makes for good reading: "Once a pup reaches 12 weeks of age, it should then be treated at 3 monthly intervals."

I also use chemistdirect.co.uk, I've found their service to be good and quick delivery. So much cheaper than the vets to buy online, isn't it?!

    :)

That sounds like overkill to me.

Mine are done once a year.

Worming, I guess is harmless but I definately would not be putting chemicals on their skin every month.

Our vets have always told us (with puppies and kittens)to use advocate every month until 6 months, then with our dog we went with frontline every 8 weeks and drontal every 3 months, but with the kitten the vet has advised us to stay on advocate and use drontal for the other worm that the advocate doesnt kill. BTW I use vetuk.co.uk for drontal and frontline. Hoping frontline combo will be prescription free soon too so I can get that from them too.

We wormed every month until 6 months then once every 3 months. I also Frontline every other month rather than every month. Our vet had Milbemax on special 4 for the price of 3, so we get them there.

    Thanks everyone :)

We wormed them today with Drontal and Advocate and have made a note to switch to every three months now, as the youngest is six months. Will stick to Advocate monthly or bi-monthly though.

    Hi
Yes - the correct advice for worming is monthly until 6 mths old, then every 3 months. Personally I use Drontal Plus for my pooch.
Milbemax is just as good though, but is POM-V so can only be got from the vet

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Was talking about this today with someone, our vet used to use Drontal but since it is so readily available online, now gives Milbemax. This is prescription only and obviously it is to deter people from buying online as they do not know what their pet is getting.

I never realised it had to be prescribed - I got some from my vet for my friends dog as it was on offer, I said I had lost the tablets and they just gave me some more.
