Working tax credits.

Does anyone know how they work out your entitlement for working tax credits. I know they go off what you earned the previous year but I still cant understand how they formulate it.
My son works through an agency and has applied for the credits. He has been awarded £27 per week whilst at least 7 of the people he works with (same age and pay rate) say they get £50 plus each week.
Just wondered if anyone could explain the difference, thanks.

It depends on circumstances - more for a couple than a single, kids etc
If no kids the entitlement tables are here
