    Since when?

That aside, it's hardly practical on a day to day basis when you need to be somewhere by a certain time. You'd probably waste a lot of time.

I was thinking of the occasional trips home rather than daily commuting.

I thought hitching was illegal now anyway. As for occasional trips home, make sure they are planned in advance (12 weeks if going by train) and that way tickets can be bought at the cheapest price. There are many ways to get cheaper tickets, this site lists quite a few of them.

All these comments about students getting books from the library to save money are somewhat unrealistic. Students are expected to buy the course texts and the libraries usually only hold two or three copies of each book.

Unfortunately, secondhand books are not always a viable option either as some books are specially published for a specific course and the content may change every year.

Hitchhiking is only illegal on motorways. It always has been.

There are very few physical books in Unversity libraries nowadays.

Check the University's online resources, many pay millions of pounds a year to give students access to journals and books online.

I used the library all the time. I don't think I bought a single book. Maybe I was lucky that my library was incredibly well-stocked (one of the biggest in the country), but I know of others elsewhere who have managed fine. All it takes is some forward-planning, a knowledge of how to use the library properly, and how to use a book academically.

Everything depends on the course and how often the book is used.

Every university course I've done states that a certain book is required reading for a course.

However while some courses use the book extensively others use the book for background reading. This means you can use an alternative and manage without it particularly if you are in halls with another student nearby with the book. ;)
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Yes, you were lucky. 25 students doing a module, three course texts in the library. One reference, two for lending.

Unfortunately, somebody is going to be unlucky and have to buy the book.

My library never had a reference section, the shortest loan was four hours. Different classes had different numbers of texts, with one only having a few for everyone. If I can manage it then I'm sure others can too as long as they learn to work things to their advantage.
