Young drivers car insurance

My grandson of 17 will be taking his test soon and is very keen to be driving. The car is ready
for him as his brother is getting a new one today. The insurance for the older brother (19) was approx £1600 for last year but for the younger one his parents are being quoted £5000. Does anyone know where we can go for more realistic quotes? The parents are being told that it's all changed over the last six months.

Insurance for young drivers has changed significantly in the past few months as one of the major players, Quinn, is no longer a participant in this market for new business.

Quotes will depend on the type of vehicle, postcode etc. The best bet is probably to contact a local broker to help you and they can try whoever they think might offer better terms - but highly unlikely you will get insurance for £1600.

To be honest I wish my son hadn't passed till he was 18! From 17 he had cover from young marmalade as a learner, this came in around £90 per month fully comprehensive and would have been the cheapest option to keep him driving for the first year.

After passing his test (took a couple of months) it was £2600 to add him to our insurance for 7 months or over 5K to insure him to drive a Frod Ka worth 1k.

He is 18 at the end of November and then its £280 to add him to my insurance through to next June. The system seems designed to keep 17 year olds off the road.
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!

Quinn is open for new policies as I took one out with them today. They were suspended for 3 weeks in March/April but are now trading in administration. They are fully covered by the UK regulatory authorities so even if they fail there is no risk.

They were by far the cheapest option for my 17-year-old daughter.

    Try Bell insurance.
Put parents as named drivers, stick to group 1 or 2 cars, put in a ridiculous excess.
