Well, considering the NKBA is American, you can generally ignore their "guidelines" as they have no relevence to the regulations over here.

This is exactly what I was wondering. Obviously, in the US houses ae generally bigger maybe I should scale down the NBKA guidlines. I've settled on 1m all the way round the Island which, I feel, is more than enough

1m is great if you have the space. On a few occasions I've had to plan kitchens with only 750mm around the outside, it still works, it's just not ideal.

Oh and a note to anyone who is doing a new build or an extension. Just bear in mind that if you have any building work done at the same time as changing the kitchen, you will need to ensure that you confirm to current building regs with regards to wheelchair access. 800mm is the bear minimum for a passage-way, but you also need to include an open area for a wheelchair to turn round in the main area of the kitchen. This can be either a square section of 1200mmx1200mm or an eclipse of 1000mm by 1400mm...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Try and get in 1.1m where there are appliance located along the run (fridges, ovens, dishwashers. 900 is the least I'd do as a designer if there are no appliances.

Whoever suggested 70cm to you was having a larf. Please tell me who they were so I can steer clear of them.
