Hey all.
I passed my test two weeks ago on automatic. Is there any point on going on to pass on manual? I have about about 40 hours experience on manual.

If you ever want to drive a manual car, then yes, it is worth passing a manual test.swtchick87 wrote: »Hey all.

Not much else to say, is there?0 -
For one thing, it can limit your choice of cars, especially if you are looking to buy second-hand. I would say from experience that a lot of second-hand cars are manuals, and there are fewer automatics. Obviously if you are buying new, then the world is pretty much your oyster, I would hazard a guess that you can get automatic versions of pretty much all cars.
You may also find that if you need to drive a vehicle from your workplace or on behalf of someone else, that there may not always be an automatic available.
Upto you how you want to weigh up the pros and cons of resitting another test, but I'm interested to know why you didn't take the manual test in the first place?!? (Having a manual licence entitles you to drive both automatics and manuals).0 -
My sister learnt and passed her test in an automatic, she then took her manual test like 4 months after. I think it's just cause of the range of cars she had to choose from that was the final decision maker for her0

I first used to take lessons on manual, I went for my test and I kept stalling. When I moved to London I thought it might be better to get around in an automatic. I realise that maybe I should of stuck with manual. I have passed my test and I'm thinking if I go for my test again will I be more likely to be passed as I already posses a license?Serial lurker..0

Then you'll be sadly disappointed. You'll be passed if you reach the required standard in the test on the day, not because you already have an automatic license.swtchick87 wrote: »I have passed my test and I'm thinking if I go for my test again will I be more likely to be passed as I already posses a license?
Do you own an automatic or driving one yet since you passed?0 -
Gettting back to the original question...swtchick87 wrote: »I passed my test two weeks ago on automatic. Is there any point on going on to pass on manual? I have about about 40 hours experience on manual.
I would say yes if you can afford to. However, there are plenty of automatics around both new and used, you just have to be prepared to look a little harder.
At least the pressure of taking the test again will be reduced. It's the stress of being tested that causes many people problems. As well as the other disadvantages mentioned, another is if you get a courtesy car for some reason like servicing or repairs. The chance of an automatic courtesy car being available is slim at best. Also, if you go on holiday and want to hire an automatic, that can be expensive - unless you go to the US, where automatics seem to outnumber "stick shifts":)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
