My daughter's laptop was running slow so gave it to a friend's friend to sort out, when it came back it would not run Microsoft security essentials or Onecare scans, it does not recognise the version and offers to update but at a cost of over £100, please help, thank you.

LOst one friend then, and he/she has probably lost two, I am off to bed, but the night owls will be here soon, and will pick up on the logs , good luck

OK the recommended action is to follow this

    Download MALWAREBYTES free version
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Open malwarebytes and go to UPDATE and click 'check for updates'. After its updated go to SCANNER and click PERFORM FULL SCAN then click SCAN
Remove everything thats found (needs to be ticked)
Post the COMPLETE log here AFTER youve deleted everything it finds

    reboot

Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD THIS VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/2894/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

Sounds like you have a rogue security programme, on no account pay anything.

    Follow debitcardmayhem's instructions.

When Each of the to programs finish the log opens up with Notepad
go to the menu bar and Edit...Select All (CTRL+A) Then Edit...Copy Then come to this thread reply and select edit...paste (CTRL+v) .
If the log is too big to paste in one go then paste the first half, then switch back to the Notepad with the log and put mouse cursor at the start of the next line, hold the shift key down and press page down until all of the end of the text is highllighted then edit copy(CTRL+C) again and paste into a new reply.
    I hope that is helpful.
