Peak Oil - redundencies looming

I was wondering what I can do to prepare for the impending 'peak oil' crisis we are due to find ourselves in in 2015?
As far I understand the world is going to crash economically when oil can no longer meet demand, since our economy relies on growth and growth relies on oil - we're screwed.
So what can I do to prepare for this, learn to garden fruit and veg? learn a trade like carpentry or something which isn't oil dependant?
Any ideas?
PS, why is this not the major topic of the day? we all know oil is going to run out and that with the emergence of India and China reserves are dwindling dramatically (we're using 90 MILLION barrels a day!). Strange that its not on everyones lips since no-one can avoid this.
If you've not heard of this try googling 'peak oil' and inparticular 'Life after the oil crash' by Matt Savinar

You do know that there is plenty of oil in the world it just isnt comercially exploitable, if you consider that most oil is currently coming from land or slightly offshore that leaves most the ocean untapped until someone can find a way of sticking an oil rig in the middle of nowhere and a ship to dock at it.0

Thats just it, isn't it - If its not commercially viable who's going to extract it?
I'm not too worried about actually running out of oil, its just that our entire economy is reliant upon CHEAP oil, if supply can't keep up with demand its not going to be so cheap anymore0 -
As the "easy to get to" oil dries up then the oil thats currently not commercially viable will become more viable, thus the oil companies will start to extract it. Simple
Oil will however continue to get more and more expensive & the added expense will make the current non-viable areas viable.Proud of who, and what, I am. :female::male::cool:0 -

Actually - you've raised a question most people are trying hard not to think about.
I'm fortunate enough that I wont need a job for that much longer (as I'm no "spring chicken").
I DO wonder about younger people though.
I think we all need to ensure that we are as self-sufficient as we can manage to be - and that isnt much for most of us I do know...but every little helps.
The jobs in the future will be back on the land - millions of people will have to go back to living and farming on the land - so I think its wise for younger people to learn what "traditional" type farming/self-sufficiency skills they can.
Generally its wise to do anything that is within ones power to have as little reliance as possible on having a "conventional job".0 -
Catflea,
When oil is a £10 a gallon it will be commerically viable, however who's going to be able to afford it?
I'm not being overly doom and gloom, even BP (or was it Esso - one of 'em) stated we will hit peak oil in 2015. We can't keep extracting oil at 90 million barrels a day and expect it not to run out.
Seriously, google this one - it is real and it is going to be scarey.0
