RBS Sell Off

Next year all RBS branches in England will be transferred to Santandar. With all the bad publicity they get was thinking of moving my bank account to Barclays before the chaos starts, which I have a feeling it will.

Am I a doom monger, and stay put and see what happens or stick to my plan and move?

Yes, I'm afraid you are doomed.

Why not move to FD and get £100 cashback (probably more if you get a shared referral from the referals board)
  • Move while you still have your sanity!

I've been with Alliance and Leicester for a while and was really happy with their service. Until the transfer to Santander started.

In the past couple of months, three out of four A&L internal account transfers have failed, two of them resulting in A&L charging me an overdraft fee. Then a direct debit was rejected and A&L now insist it had never existed, despite them telling the other party the new account details and them having paid it before.

I was locked out of my online Santander credit card account (a separate system from the main A&L account) during one part of the upgrade. Santander customer services told me that this had affected a lot of A&L customers but they don't know how many or who, and have to wait for customers to complain before they can fix it.

Two Customer Service advisors told me that it was not possible to use a transfer function that is clearly displayed on the A&L site, and which I had been using successfully for a long time. The same two muttered that they don't know much about the online bank.

Oh, and the online systems might or might not be available over the weekends (daytime); and if they are available, the functionality might or might not do what you thought it would do. And there's absolutely no notice of any of these outages - you generally find out after starting the login process when the 2nd or 3rd screen freezes and eventually tells you the site's unavailable.

Now, I've been involved in IT for a long time and appreciate what a nightmare it must be to amalgamate various diverse computer systems. I was actually prepared to ride out any potential issues. But there is no excuse for the total lack of training, knowledge and even interest amongst the customer service advisers.

It's a far cry from the 'good ol' days' of that friendly Bootle accent, which would cheerfully sort out your problem.

Of course the RBS transfer might be totally problem-free...

It's only the RBS ones in England & Wales - plus NatWest branches in Scotland.

After the transfers, RBS will be the brand in Scotland and NatWest in England/Wales.
