EDF - 7 calls in 2 months urging DD payment

Seven telephone calls in the last two month, one doorstep visit, and numerous letters (some with bills, others not) trying to convince me to move to Direct Debit. Is this a record?

On the face of it a 6% reduction in charges looks reasonable but I have convinced myself they will over-charge each month, particularly when we move into Spring and Summer, and I will not actually be any better off financially.

I really should get around to comparing suppliers, yet again.

Sorry for the grumble.

why not switch to direct debit, and provide your own meter readings...particularly until you do manage to do a comparison with other suppliers...if they do overestimate your usage you will get that money back...but at least you would have saved from the reduction with direct debit?

  • I accidentally cancelled my EDF direct debit and a short while later I got a letter from them offering me a £25 Sainsburys gift card if I switched my payments to direct debit. So I did and got a £25 gift card :) Result. I have since changed supplier but i was happy enough with EDF until they hiked their prices.

It's almost always cheaper to pay by direct debit and this is often a condition of the cheapest tariffs. Yes they may 'overcharge' (take more than you owe) but you get it back eventually! When I left EDF I had around £45 in credit and also got £55 cashback from switching to new supplier (Eon) so that's already £100 towards my next bills.

You may as well compare and then switch if someone else is cheaper - go via topcashback and get anything from £40 to £100 cashback as well.

Maybe I'm the exception but the only communication I get from leccy companies is to reduce my direct debit. I don't want to, I know how much I have with them and I know how much the winter bills may be. Why should I cut the dd down in summer and increase to a much larger amount in winter? I like to know how much is going out each month and don't like nasty surprises.

We ended up overpaying Southern Electric with the direct debit payments, so just phoned them up and were given the extra back immediately (as we were about to go into summer). No problems whatsoever.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

you are aware that the over payment during the summer is to cover the costs of your winter energy usage as this will be far higher then you realise...

you could end up not paying enough in the winter and leave yourself with a deficit
