I recently purchased a voucher for a three-course meal at a local restaurant. When we got there, the restaurant had a separate menu for Groupon clients - it was a very pared down selection of what they usually sell. Fine - but then there was a price supplement for around half of the dishes. None of this (different menu, supplements) was mentioned in the fine print. When I did the maths, the saving or value of the deal was not as high as the offer had claimed.

• Just to say, if anyone has any problems with Groupon refunds, it might bear more fruit to air your problem publicly on their facebook page. I've been attempting to get a refund for a while now and it wasnt until I sent a public message of complaint on their page that I got a response.

That's quite naughty of them. Shouldn't you report them to Groupon then for breaching the conditions? I think I would. You never know, you may still be able to get something back? I think Groupon's a good idea, but it also seems that maybe some of the retailers etc are the ones causing the problems. They shouldn't put the deal on groupon if they don't want to honour it!
• Yes, always good to check them out online, but then if you book and they present you with a limited menu it could be a bit of a problem if you are not expecting it. Unfotunately it seems that the retailers are doing what they want, and that means groupon could be a bit hit or miss depending on the individual place.
• I have had good and bad experiences with groupon, really depends if you're willing to take the risk. I've had an amazing experience getting my nails done and a very bad haircut/highlights (she made my layers very short, and did less than a half head of highlights while tutting about the condition of my hair) I was a bit dubious about the hair one anyway as I always go to the same woman.

My aunt recently booked a Morocco hotel deal through groupon though and said the hotel was fantastic despite bad reviews on trip advisor, so yeah just depends!

I was very tempted by the York hotel offer. It just looked too good to be true, so I checked the Groupon reviews out. Am I glad I did not go for it. Have unsubscribed to their e mails. This company needs to get its act together if it wants to succeed.

Update: I eventually got through to groupon and they offered a refund and were unaware that the email was down.

Hi, I too have bought a groupon voucher for the Hotel Noir in York and after phoning the Hotel today I was told all Fridays booked up, although some availability shown on website.

I have attemted to find the e mail support@groupon.co.uk but it does not seem to exist. Could you let me know how you managed to contact them?

Thanks

On the internet you can be anything you want. It`s strange so many people choose to be rude and stupid.
• I've had really positive experiences with Groupon. I've bought about 20 vouchers in total, mainly for beauty things but a couple of other bits and bobs too. I've had to get two refunds, both with no problem at all. I like to stock up on hair deals so I can get decent haircuts throughout the year. Couple of things worth mentioning, keep an eye on the expiry date as a lot of people end up missing it (it can range from a few weeks to a year depending on the deal) and another thing is don't be afraid to request a refund if you change your mind as you do have a seven day cooling off period. Last time I went for a haircut everybody else who was having a haircut was doing so with a Groupon voucher :) I found the absolute best stylist thanks to Groupon (however I'm still making my way through my stock of vouchers) and all in all I'd say it's a really good service.

Tread carefully with holiday deals as they often are associated with time-share stuff.
Never argue with an idiot; they'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.
• Good to hear there are positives too!

We used our Groupon deal at The Big Blue in Glasgow on Saturday night. Meal was excellent and we were treated very well. I don't think they cut the portions or anything either as we were stuffed afterwards!

It was advertised as £19 for 2, about $45 value or something. Although we are still very happy with what we got, they had a 3 course special advertised outside on a board for £11.95. So we could have got it for £24 really if we'd just turned up, but only because we didn't take them up on the Coffees which were included in our deal but not the £11.95 one. That said, we now know we can get the £11.95 deal if we want to go back without a Groupon voucher!
