Storage v panel heater advice
I know there are a large number of threads on this site around electric storage heating and some very knowledgeable responses but I have quite a specific query and am hoping for some advice.
I live in a three bed flat in the north of Scotland and currently have three storage heater – in the living room, hallway (which doesn’t work) and bathroom. The rest are panel heaters with timers.
My electric bills are quite reasonable (about £75 a month) but Iast winter I noticed that I paid more for the two working storage heaters (and presumably hot water) even running on economy 7 than for the rest of my electric use.
I have an electric fire in the living room which is generally on for at least part of the evening through the winter as the heat from the storage heater is really only background heat and we always have showers rather than baths so hot water usage (from economy 7) is limited.
My quandary is this – given that one of the storage heaters needs replacing and the bathroom one is starting to rust (they are all at least 20 years old) do I replace them with newer storage heaters or just do away with economy 7 and go for panel heaters?
My partner and I are out of the house from 7am to 6pm so do not really need the heat produced through the day and while the bathroom is warm at midday, it is cold by the time my partner showers after work.
I know that per hour panel heaters cost more to run but I wouldn’t anticipate having them on for seven hours a day, probably three or four would suffice for the rooms they are in. Any advice would be much appreciated
Thanks

Add together your consumption from both meters over a year e.g 10,000kWh @ cheap rate and 5,000kWh at day rate(15,000kWh if my arithmetic is correct)
Then feed both figures into a comparison website, firstly as 10,000kWh + 5,000kWh on an Economy 7 tariff and note cost.
Then 15,000kWh on a 'normal' tariff.
If the normal tariff is close or better than the Economy 7 price, then a normal tariff will be better as you won't be wasting heat during the day when you are at work.0 -
Simple.
Would you like to take advantage of heating your home with cheap rate E7 electricity (which is what storage heaters are designed to do) or would you prefer to pay twice or three times the price for the same amount of energy during the day???
With modern storage heaters, correctly controlled (and a correctly sized installation) you won't have cold heaters at 7pm and they shouldn't give out silly amounts of heat during the day (unless you want them to)."Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100
