tax credit overpayment

Hi,
I need some advice and have been to C.A.B but they were not much help. I recieved a letter from HMRC re: overpayment 2004-2005. It is over £3500 and at the time i wrote and wrote and was told they had never recieved any correspondance from me. I looked online for some info about disputing the overpayment and found out for the year in question HMRC had a computer glitch and lots of people were overpayed but HMRC sued the company who caused the glitch to the sum of £70million. Can I still dispute this, it is as though they want paid twice as they already recouped the money from EDS(the company they sued). At the time they were not interested but the same place I found out about the glitch says that the people working at the call centre never had all the information to hand ( caused by the glitch ) that they needed. I know it's not the call centre staff's fault but if I had this sort of cash to hand, I wouldn't need to claim the credits. Please, any info would be appreciated.:(

    What is the overpayment for?

And is your paperwork from the time correct?

What was it that made you realise you were being overpaid when you wrote to them?

Had letter too but only for £200.

Letter does state "You may spread yout repayment over the next 12 months if you wish. To arrange, please ring 0845 302 1429"

Anyone got a 01 or 02 number for them ?

Edit - saynoto0870.com has 0289 053 8192 listed as alternative number for HMRC.
  • I recieved a letter which said I'd been overpaid by £700 when I phoned them to make enquiries they then said the records dating back from 2006 now state I owe£1,099 which is devastating. I've been sending in my income (mainly self employed) each year and there has been no indication that the amount had become so large and yet they still kept sending me money each month!!!! why now I'm in even more dept than if I hadn't claimed the tax credit. Im so angry but what to do?
    I feel your pain

What exactly is this 'glitch' that happened? Not something I have ever heard of. I know in the early years the income disregard was a lot lower ie. earn £2500 or more than you did last year = overpayment, it is now £25k (unfortunately changing back to £2500, be careful).

Can you give me a link to where you read about this glitch in the system?
